Gardens Lawn Tennis Club played host to the Men’s Club Championship final this past Sunday 14 December.
After a gruelling fortnight of intense competition, the two men left standing were Lance “coach” Sawyer and Eric “angles” Zulch.
In the sweltering heat, the two players went toe-to-toe in what turned out to be a high-octane final.
Cheered on by a healthy crowd filled with families, friends, tennis aficionados and hipsters to boot, the players went at each other with real vigour and purpose.
The first set proved a close affair with Zulch triumphing in the tie-breaker courtesy of some crushing down-the-line backhands. He took the opening set 7-6 and with it the momentum into the second.
It was evident that Zulch meant business as he raced into a 4-0 lead owing to a double break of serve. He worked the angles superbly on court and had Sawyer sweating and searching for answers.
But spurred on by a band of his tennis students, Sawyer launched a mini comeback. The fifth game of the second set saw Sawyer break Zulch’s serve for the first time in the second. He hauled himself back into the contest at 2-4, on account of some gritty play and an array of fine-tuned reflex volleys.
Alas, Zulch’s all-round game proved too hot to handle. He held his nerve to close out the second set 6-2 and the match in straight sets. He deservedly earned the title on a day that was enjoyed by all.
