On Sunday 22 May, beneath beautiful blue skies on a sun-kissed Cape Town day, a healthy crowd of vociferous spectators were treated to a wonderful afternoon of food, drink and high-level tennis. Sunday was the culmination of Gardens Lawn Tennis Club’s Singles Championships. The keenly anticipated tournament, which continues to grow in stature, spanned over two weeks and certainly delivered in terms of enjoyment and entertainment.
Congratulations to Shani van der Merwe who beat Valerie Espinosa in an entertaining ladies’ final. The first set was an evenly-match affair with both ladies producing a top level of tennis. The pair gave their all and must be credited for producing an entertaining finale. Ultimately, the guile and wherewithal of Van der Merwe told in the second set and she was able to retain her crown. The South African defeated her Panamanian counterpart 6-4, 6-1.
Meanwhile, in the men’s side of the draw, André Marki defeated Lance Sawyer in a closely-fought final. Both players produced an incredible display of athleticism and stroke play in what proved to be an energy-sapping contest. Marki took the first set 6-4 and clearly fed off the energy of the crowd. The second set was equally as nail-biting and, at one stage, it appeared as if Sawyer would take the match to a deciding 3rd set. Marki was feeling the effects of a gruelling semi-final and had to dig deep in order to close out the match 6-4, 6-4.
In other news, Jennifer Allen and Raphael Patricot were the deserved winners of the back-draw. Well done to all our finalists and we hope that everyone who took part in the tournament enjoyed the experience or – at the very least – learnt something positive from it! And finally, a massive thank you to our dedicated tournament organiser, Trina Duncan, who masterminded the event and somehow even managed to get the weather to play ball!
